Jason Medows

We are a 140 head cow calf operation in Crawford County, Missouri. My family has had a significant history in the cattle/agricultural business.

My grandfather was a WWII Navy veteran who went to agricultural school on the GI bill following his return home. He specialized in cotton first in the boot heel region of Missouri. In the early 1950’s, he moved his family to Phelps County, Missouri and there they purchased a plot of land where they would run a variety of animals, including cattle.

My father built on his father’s establishment by purchasing land in Phelps County. Soon after, he was hired by IPLA out of Peoria, Illinois to run their livestock market in Cuba, Missouri. My father would eventually take over ownership of the sale barn when IPLA would go out of business in the 1970’s. From there, he built up his herd to be one of the largest cow/calf producers in Crawford County, Missouri.

I was born in 1983 and my involvement with cattle began when I was about 10 years old showing 4-H calves at our county fair. In 2004, I began my own herd by purchasing 65 cow-calf pairs and renting ground to run them on. I graduated college in 2008 and soon after met my wife, Keri.

Together, Keri and I have 4 boys (Levi, 13; twins Carter and Cooper, 8; and Boone, 5). We established JM Land & Cattle Company, LLC in 2015.We have grown our operation to 140 cow/calf pairs. Traditionally we have focused on marketing our steers and heifers at weaning while retaining 20-30 heifers per year for replacements within our own herd. Recently, we have shifted our focus to marketing our heifers as replacements to local producers. We have also begun to feed a few cattle per year and market them as freezer beef. Our boys enjoy raising animals and showing them at the Crawford County Fair, representing Prairie 4-H. We are committed to raising healthy and quality animals using environmentally friendly and sustainable practices. We love our herd and are thankful to be blessed by our Father in Heaven to be stewards of His planet Earth.
